Consulting Services
Questions?
What areas do you service?
The service area is focused in the SF South Bay. The cities I primarily design for are: Cupertino, Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and Saratoga.
Whats services do you provide?
I serve residential sites. Services include planting design and hardscape* design.
*Hardscape are man-made features such as paths and walls.
What types of design projects do you take on?
Lawn conversions
Keeping water on site:
Dry creek beds
Rain gardens
Rain barrels
Patios, walkways and driveways that use permeable materials that allow the ground water to be recharged.
Using materials that are already on site:
Hügelkultur - is a method that uses dead wood from trees or shrubs in raised beds or raised mounds. This saves money on hauling in soil especially if the beds are very tall and helps the soil retain moisture.
Urbanite (broken concrete) for patios and walkways
Raised bed placement
Patio gardens
What is the difference between a designer and an architect?
I am a professionally trained landscape designer with a degree in Environmental Design and Horticulture and I am not associated with a landscape architecture firm. A licensed landscape architect can additionally do commercial designs where a landscape designer in California only does residential designs. A licensed architect can provide construction documents and drainage and grading plans.
A landscape designer relies on his or her licensed contractor contacts to complete the installations according to the state regulations for construction.
How long does the design process take and how much does it cost?
The cost and length of the design process is dependent on the scope of the project. A complete yard design that would be sent off to a contractor will likely start at a couple of thousand dollars. A design cost estimate will be provided once the initial consultation phase is done.
What is a typical budget needed to get a design installed?
Costs are dependent on the size of the area, the materials, the amount of demolition needed, permits, and the contractor that you choose.
For a typical sized front yard that includes mulch, irrigation, and plants can start at around 30K.
Typical sized front yards that have additional features like a dry creek bed, a privacy fence along with new irrigation, plants and grass removal can go for around 50k.
Hardscape items such as driveways, fences, walls, pathways can significantly increase the cost of installation.
If you are into DIY, you can reduce you these costs by doing some of the installation yourself.
